Compassionate Classrooms

In a highly populated country like India, reaching out humane education to each and every student individually could turn out to be a daunting task. Hence, to hasten this process and to give it a PAN-India footprint, we came up with our Compassionate Classrooms program.

Compassionate Classrooms program introduces humane education contents into school textbooks that are either republished or are newly published by the various central and state educational boards in India.

As a part of various central and state education boards' panels, STRAW contributes contents relating to empathy for people, compassion for animals and care for the environment to school textbooks and teachers’ manuals, brought out by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and other State Educational Boards (SEBs).

Since tens of thousands of schools are affiliated to these boards and millions of children study in these schools, our lessons on empathy for people, compassion for animals and care for the environment reach out to a very large number of children all over India.

  • Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE): STRAW has contributed lessons on compassion to CBSE’s Life Skills Teacher’s Manual for classes VI, VII, VIII, IX and X.

  • Educational Boards of Karnataka and Rajasthan: Similarly, STRAW has contributed lessons on compassion to textbooks brought out by the Department of State Education Research and Training, Government of Karnataka. We are currently working with a similar project for the Government of Rajasthan.

  • Educational Boards, Delhi: STRAW was part of a panel created by Mrs. Kiran Walia, Ex-Minister for Education, Social Welfare, Women and Child Development in the previous Delhi Government. The purpose of this panel was to introduce a textbook on gender sensitization, in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi that led to a general uprising of youth across India. STRAW contributed contents relating to the need for compassion and empathy in gender sensitization.

Our Compassionate Classroom projects in Karnataka and Rajasthan have been supported by contributions made by The Pollination Project.
