Who Benefits from Humane Education?

In today’s world where there is human oppression, animal abuse & their exploitation and ecological degradation, all owing to avarice and materialism, it becomes important for schools to teach children humane education. Humane education, as a part of pedagogy and curriculum contributes to making education relevant to students because it explores how individuals might live with compassion and care for all living beings and the environment.

It is believed that kindness towards animals translates to kindness towards people. Research has shown that most violent criminals have a history of childhood cruelty to animals.

The imperative of promoting humane education in schools, as a part of pedagogy helps pave the way for a brighter future for all living beings because everybody benefits:

• The children benefit because in a world where there is overwhelming evidence to show that the perpetrators of violence against humans typically engaged in deliberate cruelty to animals in their past, instilling a compassionate attitude through humane education programs goes a long way to make our children responsible and conscientious citizens of tomorrow.
• The animals benefit because the next generation has learned to treat them with compassion and care, reducing instances of animal cruelty.
• The society benefits because the children who have learned to be sensitive to other creatures on this earth pass on the message of compassion not only to their current families but also carry the message forward to the next generation.
