From My Father, To the Wild: A Tribute to Unsung Strength

Jun 14, 2025 Prerana Chakraborty

Father’s Day used to be a simple occasion—a warm call, a shared laugh, sometimes a small gift. But now, it carries the weight of silence. Losing my father meant losing more than his presence; I lost my guide, my safety net, my first hero. His absence left a gap in my heart and a burden I never saw coming.

The world didn't slow down when he left. Responsibilities multiplied, and there's no handbook for stepping into those shoes. I used to reach out to him for advice on everything; now I find myself asking questions in silence.

As I reflect on his memory, I also find comfort in the natural world, where fatherhood thrives in beautiful, selfless ways. Many animal dads embody devotion that mirrors the quiet strength I knew in my own father.

Amazing Animal Dads

Consider the hornbill father, a testament to fierce devotion. The female hornbill when seals herself inside a tree cavity to lay eggs, the father becomes her sole source of nutrition. For months, he meticulously brings her food through a narrow slit, guarding and feeding her and their chicks until they're ready to emerge. It’s an incredible display of unwavering commitment.

Then there's the pygmy marmoset father. These tiny primates are true partners in parenting, carrying their babies almost constantly, day and night. This allows the mother to recover and conserve energy, highlighting the father's crucial role in the family's survival and well-being.

The giant water bug father might not be the most glamorous, but his dedication is undeniable. He carries over a hundred eggs on his back, meticulously aerating and cleaning them until they hatch. His children survive despite all odds thanks to his unwavering care.

And of course, the lion father. While often seen as protectors of the pride, male lions also play a vital role in defending their territory, which directly ensures the safety and future of their cubs. Without their presence and vigilance, the pride's survival would be at risk.

Beyond these, there are countless other incredible animal dads. The emperor penguin endures brutal blizzards, incubating a single egg on his feet for months without food. The seahorse father carries and births his young, a truly unique act of paternal care. These fathers, though often unseen, model what it means to give without pause and to love without condition.

To all fathers—human and animal—who give more than they take, who show love not in words but in presence: We see you. We remember you. We thank you.

Happy Father’s Day!
