Understanding sentience was at the core of our recent workshop, where students engaged deeply with questions around how and why animals are treated differently.
One moment that stayed with us was when a student shared how he once rescued a hen from a chicken shop, but she survived only for a few days. As we discussed the poultry industry, it helped answer his question, how generations of selective breeding and extreme exploitation have made it difficult for these animals to even survive outside those conditions.
That conversation shifted the room. Students reflected not just on suffering, but on the systems behind it, and many voiced that animals should not be treated as commodities with price tags, but as living beings who deserve freedom, just like us.
