Building Legal Sensitivity for Animal Welfare at Department of Legal Studies, Barkatullah University, Bhopal

Nov 18, 2025 @ 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Department of Legal Studies, Barkatullah University, Bhopal

Our two-hour session with the Law Department began with a key question: What does animal suffering look like within our systems? Students reflected on cruelty in various forms, illegal breeding, entertainment-based exploitation, painful experimentation, and the intensive farming of animals.

We then explored an often-overlooked angle: the environment. Using the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines, we discussed how pollution from dairy farms, poultry units, piggeries, and agricultural setups not only harms ecosystems through contaminated water, waste mismanagement, and air pollution but also causes direct animal suffering, overcrowding, unhygienic housing, ammonia exposure, and lack of clean food and water.

Through this lens, students realised how environmental laws can serve as strong tools to address both ecological damage and systemic cruelty. Strengthening one reinforces the other.

It was inspiring to see future lawyers engage deeply with how legal frameworks can advance animal protection and environmental justice.

A heartfelt thank you to the Department of Legal Studies for their support and collaboration. Thanks to HAI for their constant support.
